3 Tips on Utilizing The Space In a Garage
It is widely believed that the stuff you own will expand out to fill the space you have available and nowhere is that more proven than in your garage. There are hundreds of things you can do to regain access to your garage and maybe even park your car there on a regular basis again.
Here are some simple tips on how to best utilize the space in your garage.
If It’s A Mess, Start Small And Conquer One Section At A Time
As you look across your garage and survey what looks like hurricane debris, you might be tempted to find something, anything, else to do. Don’t let a huge mess that took years to make scare you away from getting started. Pick either one small corner or one particular type of item, take care of that and see how you feel. If you feel energized, then go on to the next thing, or corner and tackle that too. The absolute hardest thing is going to be the first ten minutes of cleaning up.
Hang things Up & Use the Wall Space
One of the best ways to clear out a lot of space in your garage quickly is to buy a bunch of strong hooks and hang all of the bicycles, kids riding toys, ladders, shovels, garden hoses, extension cords and anything else you can think of. Bikes can be hung from the ceiling most of the time, this saves both floor and wall space and is the first place you should start. Just keep installing hooks, pegs, hangers, and other fasteners and fill them up one at a time. Try to keep like items together but don’t waste a lot of time on it since once everything is neatly hung you’ll have quick and easy access like you haven’t had in years anyway.
Box Up Seasonal Items, Label Them And Stack Them
There are a lot of things you only use a few times per year. It would be nice to have them all together in a neat, water-proof, rodent proof, labeled box in order to find them the next time you need them. Things like all of your camping gear, baseball equipment, party supplies, Christmas decorations, and other once a year equipment. Buy some plastic storage containers and pack everything neatly and completely away for future use. Label everything as best you can to make it easier to find when you need things.
If you’re having trouble with too much stuff in your garage, you’ll be surprised at how much more space you’ll have take a break and come back on a different day. If it is time to let things go, you can always donate things or have a yard sale.
